Traveling with your family is an amazing experience but sometimes you just need a quick trip away from your kids whether it is with friends or your significant other. We are fortunate that the Mid Atlantic provides many nice options within a short drive. Maybe you are looking for a fun city trip that allows you to enjoy some cultural activities and some nightlife. Or you could be looking for a quiet mountain retreat that will allow you to completely unwind. A trip to the shore in a classic beach town might be more up your aisle. No matter what you are looking for there is something available within a 2-6 hour drive from here in Central PA.
For those that need a break from the monotony of carpool and soccer games a quick trip to New York City, Washington, Baltimore, or Philadelphia might be just what you need. What better way to feel like an adult than a nice dinner, some cultural activities, shopping, and maybe a show. I love that we have so many options nearby and that they are so easy to get to. Most of the time, you can park your car and not worry about getting in it again for a couple days. A favorite itinerary of mine is to take the train into NYC and then plan a weekend stay at The Blakely, in the heart of New York City. This is a great boutique hotel that is only blocks from Times Square and the bustle of the city yet close to the peace and solitude of Central Park. Harrigan Holidays is able to offer you great rates at boutique hotels like this one and many others in the city; rates that you often can’t find online with amenities that are not available online. We can also help you purchase train tickets, show tickets, and admission to many of the city sights.
Maybe a quiet relaxing retreat in the beautiful Virginia Mountains is more your speed. All down the Shenandoah corridor there are amazing bed and breakfasts and lodges available but if you are looking for a more upscale setting, the Primland in Southwest Virginia is just for you. The Primland is located in the amazing Blue Ridge Mountains south of Virginia Tech (yes I am biased on the beauty of the area). It is about 6 and half hours from Central PA so it is a longer drive but it is completely worth it. The resort offers the number #1 golf course in Virginia and an abundance of nature activities such as RTV trail riding, fly fishing, horse back riding, mountain biking, hunting in season, bow and air rifle ranges, kayaking, and more. In addition, the resort offers a top of the line spa, a star observatory, and amazing dining opportunities using fresh, local ingredients. Harrigan Holidays is able to offer you great rates at this resort as well as advice on other activities in the area. Some other beautiful areas to visit if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful trip are the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, and The Greenbrier.
My favorite romantic trip option is a quick jaunt to Victorian Cape May at the Jersey Shore. Cape May can be reached in less than 4 hours from Central PA. It is a beautiful beach town that not only offers clean, quiet beaches but also a cute, shore town with amazing dining opportunities. The great thing about Cape May is that it can be enjoyed year round. You can obviously visit in the summer but Cape May also offers activities in winter, spring, and fall. The best way to experience Cape May is either in a bed and breakfast or a stay in a classic hotel such as Congress Hall or The Virginia. They are beautiful hotels with modern amenities but still have the Victorian charm of Cape May. In addition, Cape May is a short drive from Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Stone Harbor so you can visit these other iconic Jersey shore sites. From our area you can also make quick beach trips to St. Michael’s and surrounding areas, Ocean City, MD, and the Delaware beaches.
As parents we all need a break and a chance to unwind and a quick weekend is sometimes the most convenient and affordable option. Harrigan Holidays would love to help you plan that break. We can help you decide on a location and find great rates with added amenities at many locations. We can also offer insight into dining options and activities in the area.
